The world’s only authority on lethal obesity, Stewart Lonky, PhD, MD, has devoted much of his professional life to uncovering the role of weight and its profound affect on human wellbeing. For nearly four decades, he has been a pioneering doctor with a thriving career in clinical, academic, and laboratory settings. Today he is a sought after speaker on the growing obesity and overweight epidemic and boasts an impressive history of accomplishments—many of which could literally transform medical practice. He is currently medical director and co-founder of West Coast Cardiopulmonary Medical Center Inc. After earning his MD from Downstate Medical Center and completing an internship at Brooklyn’s Kings Hospital, Dr. Lonky was named junior assistant resident at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis before becoming the senior resident at the UCSD Medical Center.
Dr. Lonky followed up National Institutes of Health fellowship in pulmonary disease and medicine.
Dr. Lonky has made countless contributions to the fields of the pulmonology, internal medicine, cardiology, toxicology, and weight management. He was one of the very first doctors to highlight the link between the environmental toxins in the food we breathe, the water we drink and the foods we eat and their effects on our health. He was the first doctor to publish peer-reviewed research on the efficacy of using natural zeolite to increase the extraction of toxic metals. He has increased awareness in the medical and lay communities between oxygen deprivation and right heart failure, which is seldom discussed in all the hype surrounding cardiovascular disease but occurs in an astonishing 1 in 20 people. As such, he is the only doctor to have developed a treatment paradigm that not only helps lethally obese patients lose a significant weight, but also safely and quickly rids their bodies of environmental toxins—the leading causes of lethal obesity.
In addition, Dr. Lonky’s research, particularly the connection between oxygen deprivation and obesity, has opened the door to new possibilities for reducing morbidity and mortality among the lethally obese. His proudest accomplishment, demonstrated through empirically validated clinical practice, has been to help thousands of challenging patients not only lose weight, but also keep it off. Dr. Lonky’s productive research and esteemed reputation is evidenced by the fact that he has authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Lonky has served as a consultant to the San Diego Department of Public Health and an assistant professor at the UCSD School of Medicine. For six years, he was the Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation at the Daniel Freeman Hospitals in San Diego. Dr. Lonky was the Vice President and Director of Medical Research and Product Development for the Trylon Corporation, a company he co-founded in 1985, and serves on the board of directors of both the NutraPharma Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the acquisition, licensing and commercialization of pharmaceutical products and technologies for the management of neurological disorders, cancer, autoimmune and infectious diseases, and the Histologics Corporation.
Actively involved in many areas of medicine, Dr. Lonky is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, the California Lung Association, and the New York Academy of Science. He holds memberships in the American Thoracic Society and the American Federation for Clinical Research.
Among the numerous awards and honors he has received through the years is an American College of Physicians Fellowship, which has only been awarded to 35,000 physicians since its inception in 1975.
Maintaining a demanding schedule, Dr. Lonky travels frequently for speaking engagements, and has participated in a multitude of high-profile health and wellness programs around the world—ones that target both academic and lay audiences.
Charismatic, knowledgeable, and incredibly down-to-earth, Dr. Lonky will not stop on his quest to increase the public’s awareness of the scourge of lethal obesity. He is a tireless crusader for remedying this epidemic. Nothing will stop him, not even the derisive comments he occasionally encounters from medical colleagues who don’t fully understand the impact of toxicity and its connection to our weight and health. But with a one-third of the world’s population now deemed “fat”—with no signs of slowing down and no obvious solution in sight—Dr. Lonky is confident that facts and proof will continue to mount in favor of his outlook and approach.
Dr. Lonky lives in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara with his wife. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
