With economic and societal growth comes the rise in the levels of toxic chemicals around us. It’s an unfortunate reality that all of us have to grapple with. But what’s even more alarming is how recent studies point to children as the most vulnerable population. It makes sense, too, given how children’s physiological makeup is still rudimentary, making them less equipped to fight pollutants. Because of this, backed with years worth of research, experts have finally formed a unique coalition asking for stricter regulations against chemicals.
The coalition composed of doctors, scientists, and health advocates released their first statement called the Project TENDR which says, “We as a society should be able to take protective action when scientific evidence indicates a chemical is of concern, and not wait for unequivocal proof that a chemical is causing harm to our children.”
One of the main goals of the coalition is to reverse the current chemical regulation process. In other words, the group wants the chemical industry to prove that a chemical is safe instead of waiting for experts to prove that it’s harmful. Dr. Jeanne Conry, an obstetrician-gynecologist and former president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said, “Before we can prescribe medicine, we have to prove it’s safe. So how come with the chemical industry, we assume everything is safe and have to prove there’s harm?”
This bold step by various experts is definitely one that we really need right now. Studies have shown that the chemicals commonly found in our households possibly pose a threat to the developing brain. It’s about time we demand more from the chemical industry. Our families deserve to live in healthy homes. Of course more actions are needed to achieve our goal of a healthier, toxin-free environment, but this is undeniably an important move.
